You’ve just discovered hardstyle. Maybe a clip from Defqon went viral on your feed. Maybe a friend dragged you to a festival. Maybe an algorithm decided you needed 150 BPM in your life. Whatever brought you here – welcome.
Now you’re seeing words like “euphoric”, “raw”, “xtra raw”, and “freestyle” thrown around, and none of it makes sense yet. Don’t worry. Here’s the breakdown.
Euphoric Hardstyle
The sound: Uplifting melodies, emotional breakdowns, pitched kicks, and major key progressions that give you goosebumps. This is the side of hardstyle that makes people cry at festivals – in a good way.
The vibe: Hands in the air, singing along, feeling every note. Euphoric sets are built around big emotional moments and anthemic drops.
Think: Festival anthems, cinematic intros, melodies you’ll be humming for weeks. If hardstyle were a movie, euphoric would be the soundtrack.
On Dirty Workz: Our main label has always had euphoric DNA. From Coone’s early productions to Da Tweekaz’s crowd-pleasing anthems, this is where it all started for us.
Raw Hardstyle
The sound: Distorted kicks, darker atmospheres, aggressive energy, and industrial influences. The melodies are still there, but they’re moodier, heavier, and built to hit you in the chest rather than the heart.
The vibe: Head down, fists pumping, pure energy. Raw sets are physically demanding to dance to and that’s exactly the point. It’s hardstyle with the safety off.
Think: Dark cinema. Dystopian energy. Kicks that feel like they’re reshaping your ribcage. If euphoric is the hero’s theme, raw is the villain’s entrance.
On Dirty Workz: Our sublabel Acid Reign is dedicated to the raw sound. It’s where we release the darker, heavier side of our catalog.
Xtra Raw
The sound: Take raw hardstyle and push everything further. More distortion, more aggression, less compromise. The kicks are more processed, the atmospheres are more extreme, and the production leans heavily into industrial and experimental territory.
The vibe: Intense. Relentless. The kind of sets where you leave drenched in sweat and wondering what just happened. Xtra raw doesn’t ease you in – it throws you in.
Think: If raw is the villain’s entrance, xtra raw is the final boss.
Freestyle / Classic Hardstyle
The sound: A nod back to hardstyle’s roots. Reverse bass kicks, simpler structures, and a tempo that sits comfortably around 150 BPM. Less processed, more direct, with a rawness that comes from simplicity rather than distortion.
The vibe: Nostalgic for the veterans. Fresh and different for newcomers. Freestyle sets feel like a history lesson you can dance to.
Think: Early 2000s hardstyle energy with modern production. The genre remembering where it came from.
Happy Hardcore / UK Hardcore
The sound: Higher BPMs (usually 160-180), pitched-up vocals, and relentlessly cheerful energy. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a good time.
The vibe: Pure joy. The kind of music that makes it physically impossible to stand still. Happy hardcore is hardstyle’s hyperactive younger sibling.
On Dirty Workz: Our Electric Fox sublabel is dedicated to this sound. It’s proof that not everything has to be dark and heavy to be good.
Hardcore
The sound: 160+ BPM, extremely distorted kicks, and an intensity that makes raw hardstyle sound gentle by comparison. Hardcore includes sub-styles like uptempo (even faster, around 180+ BPM) and industrial (darker, more experimental).
The vibe: If you thought xtra raw was the ceiling, hardcore is the reminder that there’s always another level. Dominator festival is the spiritual home of this sound.
Where Do You Start?
Honestly? Everywhere. The beauty of hardstyle is that all these subgenres exist on a spectrum, and most fans eventually explore the full range. Start with whatever grabbed your attention first, then let curiosity take you deeper.
Go to a festival and wander between stages. You’ll hear the differences immediately. The euphoric stage will have hands in the air and singalongs. Walk to the raw stage and the energy shifts completely. Keep walking and you’ll find hardcore pushing everything to the absolute limit.
At Dirty Workz, we release across the spectrum because we believe in all of it. Main Label, Acid Reign, Electric Fox, DWX Copyright Free, DWX Covers – each sublabel exists because each sound deserves its own space.
Welcome to hardstyle. Pick a subgenre. Or better yet, pick all of them.
